One of the most spectacular waterfront neighborhoods in Southwest Florida is located just west of the Tamiami Trail in Osprey. Sorrento Shores is a well-established community originally envisioned in the 1960s by developers inspired by coastal neighborhoods in the Amalfi Coast of Italy.
Most people driving down the Tamiami Trail do not get to see the magnificent waterfront estates built on a small peninsula surrounded by South Creek, which flows into Oscar Scherer Park, and Blackburn Bay, which separates coastal Sarasota County from the Casey Key barrier island. There are only 241 single-family residences in Sorrento Shores, and most of them are right on the water; some of them face Blackburn Bay while the rest sit along canals with private docking spaces.
Sorrento Shores is not a gated community, but it certainly feels like one because you can only access it from a couple of side roads that connect with the Tamiami Trail. This family-friendly subdivision has a nice diversity of real estate that includes Old Florida cottages, Key West homes, Mediterranean mansions, and Florida ranches. This is one of the few subdivisions in Sarasota County that features a community marina with 11 boat slips for the few homeowners that do not have private docks.
For home buyers who are into boating and fishing, Sorrento Shores is a very attractive option. In addition to easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway, residents of this neighborhood can also explore South Creek by kayak all the way into Oscar Scherer Park. Very little through-traffic in this neighborhood makes it ideal for children to ride their bikes and play outside. You can choose between visiting Casey Key Beach to the north or Nokomis Beach to the south on a daily basis; both are located less than 10 minutes away.
By virtue of being an established waterfront community, listings at Sorrento Shores tend to close very quickly. Pricing ranges between $250K and $2 million; a three-bedroom waterfront home with sweeping views of Blackburn Bay was listed in September 2020 for $1.29 million. It is generally easier to negotiate purchase prices in this neighborhood compared to a gated community.
Sorrento Shores may feel secluded, but it is actually very close to supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, pubs, and more; you only have to drive a few minutes to reach the nearby shopping district along the Tamiami Trail.
