An interesting aspect of Sarasota County is that it enjoys a certain literary reputation. Everyone knows that Stephen King owns a beach house in Casey Key, where he has gotten a lot of writing done. Historical fiction novelist John Jakes is a local writer, and the same goes for the controversial memoir writer Clifford Irving. When American poet Louise Gluck was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature, many residents were surprised to learn her association with the neighborhood of Woodmere Lakes in Venice.
In the 1990s, the literary-minded developers of Woodmere Lakes decided to pay homage to Louise Gluck by naming the neighborhood after her birthplace in Long Island. It is not clear whether they had the prescience to know that Gluck would be honored with a Nobel Prize a couple of decades later; however, they chose to name the streets of the community after famous writers such as Hemingway, Tennyson, Wordsworth, and others. It is no coincidence that the Jacaranda Public Library is almost within the neighborhood.
Similar to Woodmere in Long Island, Woodmere Lakes in Venice is a pleasant and leafy suburb conducive to family life. Although this is a large neighborhood, there are less than 200 single-family residences surrounded by greenbelt sections, canals, and mature trees. Many properties are Florida ranch-style homes, but some newer ones feature Mediterranean design. If you are looking for homes with private swimming pools and backyards, this community should be in your house hunting list. Prices start around $270K for a three-bedroom Florida ranch.
Woodmere Lakes is surrounded by attractions such as the Venice East Golf Course to the east and Woodmere Park to the north. Caspersen Beach is a 20-minute drive away, and the Venice Village Shoppes are just across Woodmere Park Boulevard; this is where you can shop at Target, Publix, Home Depot, Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Home Depot.
